How to Apply for an Indian Passport - Application Process Guidelines
Your passport is the most important document and a proof of identity that you will need to carry with you when you go abroad for your master’s studies. The passport represents your country of citizenship. When applying for a master’s program in any country, your passport is necessary right from the beginning of the application process. From applying for the IELTS exam to submitting university application forms, your Indian passport is one of the primary documents that you will need to submit. If you already have a passport, you can move to the next document required for applying to a master’s program.
Typical time required: 1 to 4 weeks
Passport Fee: Rs.1500 – Rs. 4000 as of December 2019 (depends on the required scheme i.e. Normal/Tatkaal)
Documents required to apply for an Indian Passport
- Proof of Present Address: You can submit your Aadhar Card, Parents' Passport, house rent agreement, electricity/water bills, etc. Aadhar Card is generally more preferable.
- Proof of Date of Birth: You can submit your Birth Certificate, Aadhar Card, School Leaving Certificate, PAN Card, Driving License, etc.
- Secondary School Certificate / Graduation Certificate
- Bank Statements (as advised by the Passport office)
- Other Documents

Online Application
- Register on the Passport Seva Online Portal as a new user Online Portal.
- A verification email will be sent to your email inbox. Verify your new account.
- Login to the below link with your registered Login ID.
- Click on "Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport".
- Choose the option "Click here to fill the application form online."
- Select your state and district in the RPO Selection page.
- Fill in all the details and check them thoroughly before submitting. Once reviewed, submit the form.
- Choose your preferred mode of payment for the application process and pay the corresponding fee.
- You will then get a confirmation email once your Indian Passport has been submitted to the Regional Passport Office.
Appointment Day
- Be present at the Passport Seva Kendra a few minutes before your reporting time.
- Once you walk into the main office, hand over your documents to the staff at reception. Your documents will be scanned, and a token will be issued to you.
- Wait for your turn at the waiting room for your Indian Passport
- You will have to go through three different counters, namely A, B and C.
- At counter A, your documents will be verified, and your biometrics, photograph, and signature will be taken. This procedure might go for about 15 minutes.
- At counter B, the Government officials will verify all your documents. The verification can take up to 20 minutes.
- The granting officer will do a final verification of your documents at Counter C. This will take another 20 minutes or so.
- You may have to wait at each counter for your turn.
- Once all the procedures are done with, you will receive an acknowledgement slip.
- The entire process usually takes about 2-3 hours.
Police Verification
- After the passport interview, you will receive an SMS about the progress status of your application. The following step will be police verification. You will receive an intimation about the name, and the contact number of the Verification Officer assigned.
- Visit the corresponding police station. Meet the constable who has your file. Request them to kindly finish the procedures sooner. Book an appointment with the police officer to visit your residence.
- The next day you have to be physically present at the police station for verification interview. You may be asked to bring the documents as mentioned above and a few additional documents, if necessary.
- Once the verification gets over, request the police officer to process your document and send it back to the regional passport office quickly.
- After this, your Passport will reach you in approximately 7 Days. You can use track application tool to check your passport status regularly.
- Once you get your Indian Passport, verify whether the information printed in the Passport is correct and complete. If you find any errors, report to the PSK immediately.
Trivia
- In general, it would take anywhere between 7-30 days for the issue of your 'Normal' Indian passport and 1-7 days for a Tatkaal passport.
